Do not take CLAMELLE:
- if you are allergic to CLAMELLE or any other macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin or clarithromycin. An allergic reaction may cause skin rash or wheezing,
- if you have liver problems,
- if you are taking ergot derivatives such as ergotamine (used to treat migraines),
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Warnings and precautions
Take special care with CLAMELLE:
Your doctor needs to know before you take CLAMELLE if you have or have had any of the following conditions:
- Kidney problems.
- Heart conditions.
The following conditions have been reported with the use of CLAMELLE:
- Serious allergic reactions (such as anaphylaxis angioedema, fever, eosinophilia, and skin eruptions).
- Pseudomembranous colitis (inflammation, swelling and irritation of the large intestine).
- Super-infections that is not sensitive to CAMELLE.
Ergotism, or ergot poisoning may be possible (symptoms of poisoning include nausea, vomiting, muscle pain and weakness, numbness, itching, and rapid or slow heartbeat) if CLAMELLE is used with ergotamines (see “Do not take CLAMELLE”)
Other medicines and CLAMELLE
Always tell your healthcare professional if you are taking any other medicine. (This includes all complementary or traditional medicines).
Please inform your healthcare professional if you are taking:
- Antacids (for indigestion), CAMELLE should be taken one hour before or two hours after antacids. Antacids, aluminium- and magnesium-containing- antacids may decrease the amount of azithromycin in the blood, which may decrease its effects.
- Ergot or ergotamine.
- Astemizole (antihistamine for hay fever).
- Carbamazepine and valproate (used for epilepsy).
- Cyclosporin (used to suppress the immune system to prevent and treat rejection of a transplanted organ or bone marrow).
- Digoxin (used to treat heart failure).
- Terfenadine (for hay fever or a skin allergy).
- Theophylline (used to treat asthma).
- Triazolam (used for sleeping problems).
- Warfarin or any similar medicine to prevent blood clots.
CLAMELLE with food
You should take CLAMELLE either 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, please consult your doctor, pharmacist or other health care provider for advice before taking this medicine. Azithromycin has not been studied in pregnant women and it is not known whether azithromycin passes into breast milk. CLAMELLE must not be used during pregnancy or when breastfeeding.
Driving and using machines
It is not always possible to predict to what extent CLAMELLE may interfere with the daily activities of a patient. However, the possibility of side effects like dizziness, sleepiness, tiredness, and fits or fainting should be considered when performing these activities (see “Possible side effects”).
You should ensure that you do not engage in the above activities until you are aware of the measure to which CLAMELLE affects you.
CLAMELLE contains lactose
If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product.
