RELIVZATE can have side effects. Not all side effects reported for RELIVZATE are included in this leaflet. Should your general health worsen or if you experience any untoward effects while taking RELIVZATE, please consult your health care provider for advice.
If any of the following happens, stop taking RELIVZATE and tell your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital :
- swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips and mouth or throat, which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing
- rash or itching
- fainting.
These are very serious side effects. If you have them, you may have had a serious reaction to RELIVZATE. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation.
Tell your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital if you notice any of the following:
- shortness of breath (dyspnoea)
- lung infection (symptoms include severe coughing with the production of yellow, green, or brown phlegm, with shortness of breath and/or chest pain)
- lactic acidosis (symptoms include deep, rapid breathing, drowsiness, and non-specific symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and stomach pain)
- inflammation of your pancreas (symptoms include severe stomach pain or cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting)
- problems with your liver (symptoms include yellow discolouration of the skin or whites of the eyes with pain over the liver area discoloured urine and stools, diarrhoea, abdominal swelling, distention or bloating, loss of appetite)
- peripheral neuropathy (symptoms include pins and needles in the hands or feet, or burning, intractable pain in the limbs
- kidney problems, kidney failure (symptoms include swelling of your legs, ankles, and feet from retention of fluids, confusion, pain in the pelvis, pain of a burning sensation while urinating, reduced amount of urine, nausea, drowsiness or fatigue)
- breakdown of muscle fibres (symptoms include muscle weakness, fatigue, dark coloured urine)
- muscle weakness, softening of the bones (bone pain and fractures easy)
- abnormal distribution of fat.
These are serious side effects. You may need urgent medical attention.
Tell your doctor if you notice any of the following:
Frequent side effects:
- dizziness, headache and difficulty sleeping
- blood test indicating low levels of phosphate in the blood
- cough, runny or blocked nose
- diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, pain in the stomach, indigestion, flatulence (wind)
- rash and hair loss
- blood test indicating raised liver enzyme levels
- hives, itching, sweating
- muscle pain, joint pain
- lack of energy, tiredness, fever, back or chest pain, pain
- weight loss
- depression, anxiety
- blood tests indicating abnormal levels for the following: cholesterol or triglycerides, amylase (indication of pancreas infections), creatine kinase (indication of muscle damage), white blood cell count, glucose
- blood in urine, glucose in urine as detected with urine analyses.
Less frequent side effects:
- low white blood cell counts (symptoms include repeated fevers and infections) and red blood cell counts (symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, weakness and light-headedness, pale skin), low platelet count (symptoms include easy and excessive bruising, prolonged bleeding from cuts), abnormal organ or tissue development and function
- proteins in the urine as detected with urine tests.
Side effects with frequency unknown:
- a condition called immune reconstitution syndrome (where the immune system starts to recover but then responds to a previous infection). Symptoms include fever and worsening of breathing issues
- a low level of the electrolyte potassium in the blood as detected with blood tests. Symptoms can include weakness and fatigue, heart palpitations, muscle cramps.
If you notice any side effects not mentioned in this leaflet, please inform your doctor or pharmacist.
Reporting of side effects
If you get side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. You can also report side effects to SAHPRA via the “6.04 Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting Form”, found online under SAHPRA’s publications: https://www.sahpra.org.za/Publications/Index/8. By reporting side effects, you can help provide more information on the safety of RELIVZATE.
