The active substance is Cefalexin. It is an antibiotic which belongs to a class of antibiotics called cephalosporins. It is used to treat the following infections caused by bacteria that can be killed by cefalexin: Infections of the lungs and airways, ears, skin, bones and joints, urinary and reproductive tracts, including inflammation of the prostate gland. They are also used to treat dental infections.

Do not take Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to cefalexin or other cephalosporins (similar antibiotics) or to any of the ingredients in Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed. An allergic reaction may include rash, itching, difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue.
Warnings and precautions
Take special care with Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed if you have:
- An allergy to the penicillin group of antibiotics
- Kidney problems
- Inflammation of the large intestine, symptoms include diarrhoea, pain and fever.
Tell your doctor if you are having blood and urine tests. Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed may interfere with these tests.
Take special care with Cefalexin: Acute generalised exanthematous (AGEP) has been reported with the use of cefalexin. AGEP appears at the initiation of treatment as a red, scaly widespread rash with bumps under the skin and blisters accompanied by fever. The most common location: mainly localised on the skin folds, trunk, and upper extremities. The highest risk of occurrence of this serious skin reaction is within the first week of treatment. If you develop a serious skin rash or another of these skin symptoms, stop taking cefalexin and contact your doctor or seek medical attention immediately.
If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine. Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed contains sucrose which may have an effect on the control of your blood sugar if you have diabetes mellitus.
Other medicines and Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed
Always tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicine. (This includes all complementary or traditional medicines.) Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
- other antibiotics,
- diuretics (water tablets) such as furosemide,
- probenecid for a treatment of gout
- metformin for treatment of diabetes
- drugs used to treat leukemia.
It may be still be all right for you to be given Cefalexin Capsules and your doctor will be able to decide what is suitable for you.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, please consult your doctor, pharmacist or other health care provider for advice before taking this medicine.
3. How to take Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed
Do not share medicines prescribed for you with any other person. Always take Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Your doctor will tell you how long your treatment with Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed will last. Do not stop treatment early because your infection may reoccur. If you have the impression that the effect of Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed is too strong or too weak, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
The usual adult dose is 250 mg every 6 hours. For skin and soft tissue infections, streptococcal pharyngitis and mild uncomplicated urinary tract infections, the usual dosage is 250 mg every 6 hours or 500 mg every 12 hours.
Children over 5 years: Your doctor will calculate the correct dose, depending on the child’s weight.
Directions for reconstitution
Shake bottle to loosen powder. Add water up to the mark on the bottle, shake well, add additional water, if necessary, to make up to the mark.
If you take more Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed than you should
In the event of overdosage, consult your doctor or pharmacist. If neither is available seek help at the nearest hospital or poison control centre.
If you forget to take Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time to take the next dose, skip the missed dose and carry on as before. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
If you stop taking Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed
Keep taking Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed until your doctor tells you to stop. Do not stop taking it just because you feel better. If you stop taking Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed, your infection may return or get worse.
4. Possible side effects
Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed can have side effects. Not all side effects reported for this medicine are included in this leaflet. Should your general health worsen or if you experience any untoward effects while taking Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed, please consult your health care provider for advice.
If any of the following happens, stop taking Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed and tell your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital:
- rash, fever, itchy skin, swelling of the lips, eyelids, tongue, difficulty in breathing or sudden wheeziness. These are all very serious side effects. If you have them, you may have had a serious reaction to Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation.
Tell your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital if you notice any of the following:
- serious peeling or blistering of the skin or severe diarrhoea. These are all serious side effects. You may need medical attention.
The following side effects have been reported:
Frequent side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, changes in blood counts, skin rash, itching, fever.
Less frequent side effects
Convulsions, pseudomembranous colitis, jaundice.
Frequency unknown
Inflamed vagina, abdominal cramps, headache, dizziness, drowsiness and fatigue.
If you notice any side effects not mentioned in this leaflet, please inform your doctor or pharmacist.
5. How to store Cefalexin 125 Suspension Resmed
Store all medicines out of reach of children. Store in well closed containers at or below 30⁰C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, the product must be stored at 2 - 8 oC in a refrigerator. The prepared suspension should be consumed within 7 days of preparation. Discard any unused portion of the reconstituted suspension after 7 days. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
