Disprin Extra Strength 500 mg/300 mg Tablets

DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg / DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg tablets have analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory action. Disprin Regular Strength 300 mg and Disprin Extra Strength 500 mg are indicated for the relief of mild to moderate pain, and fever.

Do not take DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg / DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg tablets to your child:

• If you or your child is hypersensitive (allergic) to aspirin or to any of the other ingredients of DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg / DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg (listed in section 6)
• If you or your child is hypersensitive to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
• If you or your child has asthma – asthmatic patients may be sensitive to aspirin and more likely to have an allergic reaction (i.e. skin rash, breathing problems) after treatment with aspirin.
• If you or your child has history of gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation, related to previous NSAIDs therapy.
• If you suffer from heartburn, anaemia or if you or your child is dehydrated.
• If you or your child has active or a history of peptic ulceration.
• If you or your child is receiving oral anticoagulant therapy such as warfarin.
• If you or your child has haemophilia.
• If you or your child has severe liver disease.
• If you or your child has severe kidney disease.
• If you or your child has heart failure
• If your child is aged under 16 years
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding your baby.
• If you have blood or urine tests done - DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg / DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg tablets may interfere with the results of some laboratory tests.
• If you are going to have surgery - DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg / DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg tablets should be withdrawn one week before surgery because of the possibility of increasing bleeding after surgery.

Warnings and precautions

DO NOT USE CONTINUOUSLY FOR MORE THAN 10 DAYS WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR DOCTOR.

Do not share medicines prescribed for you with any other person. Always take DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg / DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

The usual dose is:

Disprin Regular Strength 300 mg

Adults: 1 - 3 tablets. Repeat 4 hourly if necessary but not more than 12 tablets during any 24-hour period.

Children 16 years and over: 1 - 2 tablets not more than four times a day, to a maximum of 10 tablets in 24 hours.

Disprin Regular Strength 300 mg can be dissolved in water, or if preferred, on the tongue.

Disprin Extra Strength 500 mg

Adult: 1 - 2 tablets

Children 16 years and over: 1 tablet

Repeat 4 hourly if necessary but not more than 8 tablets during 24 hour period, but if symptoms persist consult your doctor. Do not use continuously for more than 10 days without consulting your doctor.

DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg / DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg tablets can have side effects. Not all side effects reported for DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg / DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg tablets are included in this leaflet. Should your general health worsen or if you experience any untoward effects while taking DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg / DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg, please consult your doctor, pharmacist or other healthcare professional for advice.

If any of the following happens, stop taking DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg / DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg:

• increased risk of bleeding.
• slow blood clotting.
• bone marrow failure.
• reduced number of blood cells.
• fever.
• skin rash.
• severe itching of the skin.
• swelling of the skin.
• DRESS reaction (rash, facial swelling accompanied by abnormal heart rates)

These are all very serious side effects. If you have them, you may have had a serious allergic reaction to DISPRIN REGULAR STRENGTH 300 mg / DISPRIN EXTRA STRENGTH 500 mg. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation.

Tell your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital if you notice any of the following:

Less frequent side effects:

• increased blood level of sodium
• fluid retention
• stiff neck, sensitivity to light, headache caused by inflammation (swelling and redness) of the linings of the brain
• heart failure
• excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or tissues of the body
• high blood pressure
• narrowing of the small airways of the lungs that can cause wheezing and shortness of breath
• asthma
• shortness of breath
• hay fever
• bleeding in the digestive tract
• disturbances in the digestive tract
• sore (ulcer) in the lining of the stomach
• dark sticky faeces containing partly digested blood
• vomiting of blood
• sore (ulcer) in the lining of the mouth.
• cell death causing the epidermis (outer layer) to separate from the dermis (inner layer)
• increase in blood uric acid

If you notice any side effects not mentioned in this leaflet, please inform your doctor or pharmacist.

If you get side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist or nurse. Store all medicines out of the reach of children. Store at or below 25 °C in a dry place. Return all unused medicine to your pharmacist. Do not dispose of unused medicine in drains or sewerage systems (e.g. toilets). Do not use after the expiry date stated on the label, blister pack and carton.
