Impilo Milk Of Magnesia 425 mg/5 ml Suspension

IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA is used as an antacid and for the relief of occasional constipation.

Do not use IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA:

• If you are hypersensitive (allergic) to magnesium hydroxide or any of the other ingredients of IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA (listed in section 6).
• If you have severe kidney failure or dehydration.

Warnings and precautions

Take special care with IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA:

• If you have impaired kidney function or debility, consult a doctor prior to use.
• If you are suffering from a runny stomach, stomach pain, nausea or vomiting, do not take this medicine, unless your doctor tells you to.
• If you notice a sudden change in bowel movements that persists for a period of 2 weeks, consult a doctor before using IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA.
• If you experience rectal bleeding or fail to have a bowel movement after using a laxative, it may indicate a serious condition. Stop using the laxative and contact your doctor.

Other medicines and IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA

Always tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicine. (This includes all complementary or traditional medicines.) IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA may interfere with the absorption of other medicines if taken at the same time. Take other medicines 2 - 3 hours before taking IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA.

Magnesium salts reduce the absorption of the following medicines when taken together:

• Medicines used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure (captopril, enalapril, fosinapril);
• Medicines used to manage abnormal heart rhythms (propranolol, atenolol);
• Medicines used to treat bacterial and fungal infections (azithromycin, cefaclor, cefpodoxime, isoniazid, itraconazole, nitrofurantoin, rifampicin, tetracyclines, ketoconazole capsules and the quinolone group of antibacterials);
• Medicines used to treat viral infections (atazanavir, fosamprenavir, tipranavir, delavirdine, rilpivirine);
• Medicines used to treat hay fever or allergies (fexofenadine);
• Medicines used to prevent loss of bone density (alendronate, tiludronate, clodronate, risedronate, etidronate);
• Steroid hormones (prednisone, prednisolone, dexamethasone);
• Medicine used to treat heart failure (digoxin);
• Medicine used to prevent blood clotting after heart valve replacement (dipyridamole);
• Medicines used to treat epilepsy (gabapentin and phenytoin);
• Medicine used to treat stomach ulcers (lansoprazole);
• Medicine used to treat an underactive thyroid gland (levothyroxine);
• Medicine used to help prevent transplant organ rejection (mycophenolate);
• Iron preparations;
• Medicine used to treat high cholesterol (rosuvastatin);
• Medicines used to treat psychotic disorders (sulpiride, phenothiazines, chlorpromazine);
• Medicines used to prevent malaria (chloroquine, hydrochloroquine, proguanil);
• Medicine used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (penicillamine).

Magnesium hydroxide, as contained in IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA, may increase the absorption of ibuprofen, used to treat pain and inflammation. Magnesium hydroxide increases the removal of medicines used to reduce pain, fever and inflammation (salicylates, e.g., aspirin).

Do not share medicines prescribed for you with any other person. Always use IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

SHAKE BOTTLE BEFORE USE

ANTACID

Adults: 5 – 10 ml (one or two medicine measures)
Children 3 – 10 years: 2,5 ml (half a medicine measure)
Not more than three to four times per 24 hour period.

LAXATIVE

When used as a laxative, the medicine should be followed with sufficient water to prevent nett loss of body water. Take as a single dose, or as directed by a doctor. This product generally produces bowel movement in half to six hours.
Adults: 20 – 40 ml (four to eight medicine measures)
Children 2 – 6 years: 5 – 10 ml (one to two medicine measures)
6 – 12 years: 10 – 20 ml (two to four medicine measures)
The dosage recommended above should not be exceeded in a 24 hour period. Do not use the maximum daily dosage of this product for more than one week except under the advice and supervision of a doctor.

If you use more IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA than you should
In the event of overdosage, consult your doctor or pharmacist. If neither is available, contact the nearest hospital or poison centre. An overdose may intensify the listed side effects and may be characterised by excessive purging. Contact a doctor if you observe symptoms of too high magnesium levels in the blood (such as flushing of the skin, thirst, low blood pressure, drowsiness, confusion, loss of tendon reflexes, muscle weakness, slow and shallow breathing, disturbances in heart rhythm, coma and heart attack).

If you forget to use IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA
Continue with the next dose as directed. Do not use double the amount to make up for forgotten individual doses.

IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA can have side effects. Not all side effects reported for IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA are included in this leaflet.

Should your general health worsen, or if you experience any untoward effects while taking IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA, please consult your health care provider for advice. The following side effects may occur:

• Less frequent: Magnesium levels in the blood that are too high, which are observed after prolonged administration of magnesium hydroxide to patients with kidney impairment.
• Frequency unknown: Stomach pain, dose-dependent diarrhoea, colic.

If you notice any side effects not mentioned in this leaflet, please inform your doctor or pharmacist.

If you get side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. By reporting side effects, you can help provide more information on the safety of IMPILO MILK OF MAGNESIA.

• Store at or below 25 ˚C in a cool place. Do not freeze.
• Keep the container tightly closed.
• Do not store in a bathroom.
• Do not use after the expiry date stated on the label. Store all medicines out of reach of children. Return all unused medicine to your pharmacist. Do not dispose of unused medicine in drains or sewerage systems (e.g. toilets).
